Some of the main economy in Taipei lies in their business of agriculture. Taipei is a main producer of betel nuts, it being their second most important cash crop. But the use of slash-and-burn agriculture in Taipei is becoming more extensively used and it is causing great harm to the nutrients in the soil and reducing crop yields, therefore reducing the strength of the economy. Most importantly, the environmental issues that have risen are the most serious, such as the decrease in biodiversity around the area, and a certain species called Baer’s Pochard is disappearing due to the reduction of its’ natural habitat in China, which are swamps and marshes eventually destroyed due to slash-and-burn agriculture. Erosion is another common problem with slash-and-burn agriculture, due to the repetition of burning and cultivating plants, the roots and natural water storages in the ground are reduced and are lost, therefore letting nutrients out of the soil that are needed to grow strong crops. Lastly, deforestation is another problem with this type of agriculture, since the continued destruction of the land over the course of a few years eventually wears down the vegetation and destroys the forests and natural brush surrounding that area. This also leads to another main problem in Taipei, deforestation.
Greenhouse gases in Taipei are rapidly increasing, due to emissions from their large number of factories and the decreasing number of trees. In 2014, Taipei just had added 2 new factories in one of their provinces that produces a mass amount of car parts. The energy just used to make one part of a car is massive and therefore releases excess amounts of greenhouse gases such as carbon that pollute the air and cause a risk of cancer and various lung diseases. Also, the smog produced from these factories can make it hard to grow crops and therefore reduce food supply and their trade.
Lastly, the methods of dumping trash into rivers, lakes, streams, and other bodies of water really affects the biodiversity and wildlife that live in the water. Since fishing is a major industry in Taipei, it could affect their economy in a gigantic way and leave people jobless if the fish died due to the fact that the chemicals and other wastes poured into the water killed them.
